Tyr Ikarus
The aircraft light — four-shot autocannon, flight that transforms the engagement, and the patience to wait until the fight is messy enough to matter.
Ikarus is the only tank in Tyr that leaves the ground. The flight ability transforms the hull from a 42% camo scout into a platform above the fight — but only if you pick the right moment to launch. Use it wrong and you are a paper airplane over a heavy’s gun. Use it right and you are the reason three enemies are looking up instead of at your heavies. This page is the guide to staying in the air usefully. Parent roster: light tanks hub. Rankings: light tier list.
The four-shot autocannon
Ikarus loads four shells into a magazine that fires in rapid succession. Stacked at close range this is approximately 900 damage — enough to delete a light or punish a medium that did not angle. The problem is camo bloom. After an unsilenced four-shot dump, Ikarus is lit in a way that no other light at 42% camo would tolerate. You fire this clip only when the target is already tracked, already engaged with a teammate, or when you are confident enough in your flight exit that the bloom does not matter.
Energy shells are halved on clip tanks. Do not buy them expecting +7 per shell. Buy them only if you are desperate for the reload assist bonus and have the SLVR to spare.
The flight ability
When activated, Ikarus lifts into the air and gains a different set of physics. You can move in three dimensions, look down on terrain that would normally block your line of sight, and fire from angles no other light can reach. The August 2026 patch reworked the flight system substantially:
- Thrust duration reduced from 4.5 seconds to 3.0 seconds — flight is shorter now
- Turn speed during thrust increased by 20% — you can reorient faster while airborne
- Removed improved base accuracy in flight — you no longer get a free accuracy bonus just for being up
- Rapid turning now applies a dispersion penalty — you cannot spiral and shoot at the same time without consequences
- Aim speed increased by 20% — landing and acquiring a target is faster
- Spotted Time reduced on landing — you are harder to spot after touching down
- Gun windup reduced from 3 seconds to 2 seconds when transforming back — switching back to ground mode is faster
- Base reload increased from 7 seconds to 8 seconds — the hull is slightly slower to reload out of flight
The tech tree also changed: Hull Rotation was replaced with a heal on transform back (20/40/60 at each tier). This means you now recover health when you land, which makes flight less of a one-way ticket.
How to play Ikarus
The core mistake is launching too early. A flight Ikarus over an organized enemy is a target with no armor and wheels hanging out. The right moment is when the fight is already messy — when two or more enemies are engaged with your team, when smoke or terrain is creating visual confusion, when the enemy’s attention is split. In that chaos, your elevation and angle become advantages they cannot counter.
Do not use flight to start a fight. Use it to capitalize on one that is already happening.
Armor and survivability
Ikarus has light armor. Paper is the community’s word for it, and it is accurate. Anything that shoots at you in flight will hurt. Your survival depends on timing — launching when enemies are distracted, and landing before they reorient. The reduced Spotted Time on landing helps, but it is not a permit to hover in the open.
Common mistakes
Launching as a first action instead of a follow-up. Spiraling while trying to shoot (dispersion penalty). Firing the clip from flight at a target that is not already compromised. Staying in the air past 3.0 seconds and having to walk back. Not using the transform-back heal when available.
Builds and SLVR priority
Buy the flight duration and turn speed upgrades first. The aim speed and landing heal are the quality-of-life nodes that make the hull playable at a high level. Silenced shells are the base round for the same reason as every other light: the 50% bush bonus matters on approach. See builds for the full loadout. Compare with Kestrel if you want three shells instead of four, or with Fuse if you want mines instead of flight.
Maps: Ikarus is best on maps with elevation changes and messy sightlines — Scorch’s ridges, the towers on Fields. Avoid maps that are entirely flat and open where flight makes you a silhouette. Maps.
Patch context: the August rework is the relevant update. Check patch notes for any further flight changes before committing to a build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for new Tyr pilots and returning playtesters.
What changed in Ikarus's August 2026 flight rework?
Thrust duration dropped from 4.5s to 3.0s, turn speed increased 20%, improved flight accuracy was removed (now penalizes rapid turns), aim speed up 20%, Spotted Time on landing reduced, gun windup on transform back cut from 3s to 2s, base reload increased from 7s to 8s. Hull Rotation was replaced with a heal on transform back (20/40/60).
How do I use Ikarus flight correctly?
Wait until the fight is already messy. Launch as a follow-up to an ongoing engagement, not as an opener. Flight over an organized enemy is a target with no armor.
Why did Ikarus's reload get longer?
The August patch increased base reload from 7s to 8s, likely to compensate for the new heal-on-landing mechanic and the aim speed improvement on transform back.
Is Ikarus a good beginner light?
Not really. Flight requires reading the battle state correctly — launching at the wrong moment makes you a paper airplane. Kestrel or Phantom are better first lights.
What is the heal on transform back?
The new tech tree node (replacing Hull Rotation) gives 20/40/60 health back when you land from flight. It makes flight less of a one-way survivability cost.
